Breeders and geneticists from Russia, Kazakhstan, and Turkey held a meeting at Omsk State Agrarian University

Omsk State Agrarian University hosts the 14th International Meeting of the Kazakh-Siberian Network (KASIB) on wheat improvement

The event, which was dedicated to the 105th anniversary of the university and the 100th anniversary of its experimental field, was attended by leading scientists in the field of wheat breeding and genetics from Russia, Kazakhstan, and Turkey. The focal topic of the meeting was enlarging the genotypic diversity of wheat and ensuring proper spring wheat quality and resistance to diseases in the context of climate change. The topics of the reports were related to the breeding and genetics of soft and durum wheat, grain quality assessment, and improvement of its functional properties in various agro-climatic zones.

A delegation of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology visited the "Triticum" farm and the Cherlaksky State Variety Trial Station Later, scientists presented reports on the current directions of breeding and genetic research.

Omsk SAU Rector, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor O.V. Shumakova opened the meeting:

"KASIB is a unique platform where professionals and world-renowned scientists gather. This meeting will allow sharing of experience and determine the course for further development."

Professor Shumakova also thanked Hamit Koksel, Professor of the Faculty of Nutrition and Dietetics of Istinye University (Istanbul, Turkey), for working with Omsk SAU scientists for three years.

A. I. Morgunov, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Head of the International KASIB Program (Almaty, Kazakhstan) greeted the attendees.

"It is very important that through KASIB we combine theoretical science (genomics), phytopathology and breeding."

V. P. Shamanin, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor, Director of the International Breeding and Genetics Center of Omsk State Agrarian University, stressed that the previous international meeting of KASIB members was held in 2018 also at Omsk SAU. This choice is not accidental, since Omsk State Agrarian University is a center for creation of genetic resources for organic farming.

At the plenary session, Professor V. P. Shamanin made a report titled "Marker-assisted wheat breeding at Omsk State Agrarian University". A. I. Morgunov, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Head of the KASIB International Program presented his report titled "Results of studying the basic set of KASIB varieties" (Almaty, Kazakhstan). Laurent Genzbittel, Director of the Project Center for Agrotechnologies of Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology Moscow, Russia) made a report "Results of the genome-wide associated analysis of the basic set of KASIB varieties. Hamit Koksel, Professor, at Faculty of Nutrition and Dietetics, Istinye University Istanbul, Turkey) spoke about improving the functional properties of wheat grain and its nutritional value.

Then the scientists shared the results of studying the KASIB nurseries and shuttle breeding program "Kazakhstan-Russia-CIMMYT". They also spoke about breeding programs of Kazakhstan and Russia for 2020-2022.

On the next day, the participants of the KASIB International Meeting continued their work: they inspected a nursery for assessing spring soft wheat quality, KASIB-22 and KASIB-24 nurseries, winter wheat collections at the experimental field of Omsk State Agrarian University, visited a world-class wheat quality assessment laboratory, participated in a briefing in the laboratory for studying the functional properties of grain and its processed products, and during the press breakfast in the Botanical Garden, they tasted the products grown in the educational and experimental field of Omsk SAU.

Photos from the event are displayed in the VKontakte community.

For reference: The KASIB International Program has been implemented since 2000. Its main goal is to increase the efficiency of spring wheat breeding in Northern Kazakhstan and Siberia through the exchange of varieties, breeding material, coordinated evaluation of the material, and information exchange.
