Botanic Garden of Omsk SAU

Botanic Garden of Omsk SAU is one of the tourist attractions of the Omsk Irtysh Region and a unique body of the Western Siberia. Founded in 1927, Botanic Garden of Omsk SAU is the second oldest botanic garden in Siberia and the Far East. It is listed in the international gardening catalogue “World Botanic Gardens” and is a member of the Council of Botanic Gardens.

The collection of plants is about 1300 species, sorts and varieties. A unique “living” Red Book of the Omsk region is created in the garden. In the collection funds 32 rare species of plants are preserved, 29 species of which are included in the Red Book of the Omsk region and 7 in the Red Book of Russia. Diligent work to accumulate and preserve the collection of plants is carried out.

Botanic Garden is proud of its collection of tropical and subtropical plants, numbering more than 300 species and constantly replenishing. The greenhouse has a collection of plants of various climatic zones. Immediately at the entrance you may notice the Japanese Banana (Musa basjoo) with its wide long leaves and a grassy stem up to 4m high, as well as the Coffee Plant that grows well in room conditions and is easily cultivated in city apartments.

Side by side with these species coexist date palm – an oasis queen, common oleander, fig tree, laurel, pyramidal cypress, pomegranate, water hyacinth, water lily, boxwood tree, sequoia, beefwood tree, araucaria, wisteria, century plant and yucca, etc.

From the marshy shores of the Nile, papyrus migrated to our snowy lands, from India – Japanese bamboo, from the subtropics of Central Asia – sugarcane, from South America – feijoa, sequoia – a symbol of California, Japanese medlar. The rue family is represented by three species of citrus – lemon, mandarin, orange. Most of the fruit please with beautiful flowering in spring, and with a delicious juicy crop in fall.

The range of flower plants is rich and diverse. From the beginning of spring to late autumn, the garden is decorated with Alpine aster, white cornflower, Mexican elecampane, several species of chamomile, bristle thistle, and other wild and decorative species.

There are many cultivated, distinguished by beauty, varieties of tulips, peonies, lilies, gladioli, dahlias, daffodils, asters, chrysanthemums, irises in the garden and dozens of ornamental indoor plants species in the greenhouse.

In the collection of medicinal plants there are 250 species of plants that were brought from the Central Siberian Botanic Garden of Novosibirsk and the Altai Territory.

Trees and shrubs enframe the garden, protecting grassy species and providing a favorable microclimate. Tien Shan spruces, several species of birches, oaks, firs, willows, maples, elms, junipers, pines, viburnum, acacia, clematis, ephedra, barberries, bird cherry trees, many shrubs and subshrubs from different regions of Russia and abroad took root well.
