International Business Game “The Magical World of Mathematics” for High School Students (Grades 9–11)

On December 10, an online career guidance workshop — the International Business Game “The Magical World of Mathematics” — was held for students in grades 9–11 from Omsk, as well as from the cities of Rechytsa and Gomel (Republic of Belarus).

The game was organized and conducted by faculty members of the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the Faculty of Technical Service in the Agro-Industrial Complex of the Omsk SAU: Natalia Viktorovna Shchukina, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor; and Olga Viroslavovna Korchinskaya, Senior Lecturer.

Three teams took part in the game:

1.      Rechytsa District Lyceum (Republic of Belarus) – Team Leader: Natalia Nikolaevna Romanova, Mathematics Teacher.

2.      Secondary School No. 8, Gomel (Republic of Belarus) – Team Leader: Dmitry Nikolaevich Simonenko, Senior Lecturer, Department of Higher Mathematics, Educational institution "Belarusian State University of Transport".

3.      Omsk SAU – Team Leader: Olga Viroslavovna Korchinskaya, Senior Lecturer, Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

The game consisted of several stages:

Stage 1. Theoretical. Review of the key concepts of probability theory.

Stage 2. Problem Solving. Teams solved probability problems. For example: “There are 10 candies in a box, 3 in yellow wrappers and 7 in green ones. One candy is chosen at random. What is the probability that the candy has a green wrapper?” and so on.

Stage 3. Detailed Analysis. Each problem was thoroughly discussed by the participants.

Stage 4. Results. The jury announced the results of the game.

All participants demonstrated strong knowledge of mathematics, erudition, and broad outlooks. Using game-based learning formats helps increase motivation and interest in mathematics, while also developing critical thinking and teamwork skills.

We sincerely thank all teams for taking part in the game and wish you continued success and new achievements in studying mathematics!

The Department of Mathematical and Natural Sciences expresses its gratitude to Vladimir Vasilyevich Korchinsky, a Category I Laboratory Engineer from the Department of Geodesy and Remote Sensing of the Land Management Faculty, for his technical support of the event.
