Omsk State Agrarian University scientists created a new variety of colored wheat

Alexander Burkov, Governor of the Omsk Region, organized the online session on the selection of breakthrough projects for a world-class scientific and educational center.

More than 30 projects developed by Omsk HEIs, research centers, scientific and business partners, and different enterprises of the Omsk Region and Russia compete to be included into the scientific and educational center program.

Omsk SAU presented a project on creation of highly productive wheat varieties for ecological farming and functional food. What makes the project new and unique is picking the valuable genes out of wild grains and using them to protect ecology and human health. New seeds have high yield potential and good resistance to diseases and drought. They are designed to obtain organic grains using eco-farming technology. This makes the innovation valuable.

Omsk scientists are pioneers in creating varieties of blue and purple wheat. Colored varieties are rich in health-improving substances – flavonoids and anthocyanins. They have antioxidant properties, protect against cardiovascular diseases and reduce the risk of cancer. Omsk varieties of colored grains have high concentration of zinc which plays an important role in improving the immune status of human organism.

Omsk scientists' efforts on extending the genetic plurality of wheat, creating organic grains varieties and synthetic lines, and creating perennial wheat varieties was highly appreciated by experts.

Nikolay Durmanov, an expert at the Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO, believes that Omsk SAU developments have good chances to become world-class projects.

He also believes that "This Omsk development is also very interesting for its functional properties. It's necessary to promote the development, to create new markets, and establish links with consumers. The consumers are not just agricultural producers, they are people who will buy bread made of colored grains, and other products. So, this is the case when any expert can only say one thing – this wonderful project deserves any type support".
