Faculty of Zootechny, Commodity Science and Standardisation

 

The Faculty of Zootechny, Commodity Science and Standardisation was established on September 1, 2014. It united two faculties which had their own history and traditions.

The history of the Faculty of Zootechny dates back to December 1929, and the first group of graduates left the Faculty in 1931.

Over the years, the faculty has trained about 6 thousand livestock engineers. They have Bachelor's or Master's degree in the field of zootechny. Graduates from the faculty work in various sectors of agriculture.

The Faculty of Commodity Science was established as an independent structure on June 20th, 2000. Gennady Kopylov was the first Dean of the faculty. The first group of graduates finished their studies at the Faculty of Commodity Science in 2002. Some of the students are now leading specialists and managers at enterprises of the region. Among such enterprises are prominent companies like Wimm Bill Dann or Omsk Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Scientific and research activities

The main directions of the research activities of the staff are:

  • Improving the feeding quality for farm animals and poultry in Western Siberia;
  • Improving the farm animals' breeding abilities and their food-producing potential;
  • Determining of on-farm reserves for improving the efficiency of livestock production;
  • Use of non-traditional raw materials in food industry;
  • Quality management in production and circulation of agricultural raw materials and food products;
  • Development of a draft program of events on food safety management systems.

Students get involved into scientific and research activities starting from their first years at the faculty. They continue doing research work later, and scientific clubs functioning at different departments of the Faculty help them. Examples of such clubs are "Commodity Science, standardization and quality management", "Examination of the quality of food and non-food products", "Technique and ecological aspects of food products of animal origin production". The results are presented annually at student conferences held at University, regional and international levels.

Non-educational activities

The Faculty of Zootechny, Commodity Science and Standardisation cares a lot about students' personal, moral and physical development. It promotes physical education and organizes sports events. The most active and talented students are regularly awarded.  

Some of the faculty students participate in Omsk SAU Volunteer Center activities. Students actively participate in different public events such as show "Students' Arbat", marathons, contest "Miss and Mister of Omsk SAU", relay race "Kirovets", and others.

Vocational guidance activities

Faculty staff members and student support pupils of secondary schools and students of different colleges when it comes to choosing their future career. In this context, the Faculty of Zootechny, Commodity Science and Standardisation is in charge of 4 districts of Omsk region.

Interaction with enterprises

Practical training at enterprises of Omsk region ("Omsky Bacon", poultry farm "Sibirskaya", Poultry farm "Irtyshkaya", supermarket chain "Magnit", etc.) is an integral part of education activities. Practical training of different types are carried out in accordance with the curriculum. 

There is a special scheme developed at the faculty. It allows gradually increasing the complexity of practical training of bachelors. As a result, students get more valuable experience, and they are able to solve more complicated problems in their professional life, addressing challenges in modern economic environment.

International activities

Each year, students of the faculty have an opportunity to spend a semester at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences under the Erasmus+ program. They also can gain experience of international cooperation via participating in internships held on German and Finnish farms.

The Faculty of Zootechny, Commodity Science and Standardisation worked with students from Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Turkmenistan. Highly qualified teachers of the faculty closely cooperates with colleagues from partner universities in Belgium, Kazakhstan, China, and Portugal. Over the past 5 years, they received advanced training abroad under the following international programs: Pepsi Co Foundation (USA), Erasmus + (Portugal), program of the Ministry of education and science of the Republic of Kazakhstan "Attracting foreign scientists and consultants to leading Universities in Kazakhstan."
