The aim of the project: expansion of the genetic basis of the source material of spring wheat and maize for breeding in Western Siberia

Partners: International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (Mexico), CIMMYT representative office in Turkey, Kazakhstan-Siberian Network on Wheat Improvement KASIB.

Objectives:

  1. Joint testing of the wheat collection.
  2. Conducting joint activities on Shuttle breeding.
  3. Increasing the potential of the wheat collection.
  4. Training of researchers who work in the field of studying wheat collection of Central Asia and the Caucasus.

Omsk SAU scientists together with CIMMYT center in Mexico created a unique breeding material with genetic resistance to wheat leaf and stem rust, which is race Uganda 99 (Ug 99). This was done in the context of global program of spring wheat and maize breeding improvement. The breeding material has been successfully tested in Kenya. It was recommended for breeding improvement of wheat with genetic resistance to diseases (wheat leaf rust and stem rust).
