Omsk SAU entered the Green Metric world ranking

In 2020, Omsk State Agrarian University ranked 31st among 51 participating Russian HEIs, demonstrating a high focus on creating an eco-friendly campus that meets the UN sustainable development goals. Among the 10 agricultural Universities in Russia that participated this year, Omsk SAU took the 5th place.

The Green Metric ranking was developed by the University of Indonesia in 2010 and became the first international ranking that deals with the contribution of Universities into the implementation of the sustainable development goals. Currently, Green Metric is mainly a mean of raising people's awareness of the problems of sustainable development, and it also contributes to the internationalization of participating Universities. However, the growing popularity of Green Metric and an extensive network of participating Universities make it possible to turn the ranking into an effective tool for addressing environmental problems in the future.

The Green Metric methodology is based on 6 groups of criteria. The ranking team assesses the criteria, and a University is awarded points respectively:

  •          Setting and Infrastructure
  •          Energy and Climate Change
  •          Wastes
  •          Water
  •          Transport
  •          Education and Research

Having participated in Green Metric for the very first time, Omsk SAU scored 4,325 points and was in the middle of the list of participating Universities. When analyzing the data provided, the ranking team highly evaluated waste management at our University (975 points), the transport situation on campus (825 points), and ongoing research in the field of sustainable development (1150 points). The unique location of the main campus also affected the result. A large park zone, convenient and safe sidewalks, bike parks and dormitories located very close to academic buildings gave our University another 750 points.

This year, 912 higher education institutions from North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America and Australia participated in Green Metric ranking. Each participant must provide not just provide figures and facts about their University (for example, the proportion of energy-efficient devices), but also prove this information using a link to regulatory documents, scans of orders, news from the media, photos, etc.

The University's performance in international rankings is an important criterion that foreign applicants are guided by when choosing a place to study. It's also a crucial part of the University international image. In the context of global environmental problems, the prestige of "green" institutions that are ready to become a reliable basement for building a sustainable society is growing. Omsk State Agrarian University had already participated in the all-Russian "Green Universities of Russia", and now it successfully moved to the international level. We plan to participate in the Green Metric ranking again in the future in order to better reflect our efforts to promote eco-oriented education and make Omsk SAU more attractive to foreign partners and students.

The International Relations Department is grateful to all the departments of the Omsk State Agrarian University that helped collect information for the Green Metric international ranking.
